eating + Drinking for nursing
These tastes and smells take me on a Proustian journey back to the "unremembered state" of the early days of nursing.
mother's milk tea
People have varying accounts of how much this helps, but at a minimum it encourages hydration, which is important for nursing. The taste has a touch of anise to it but is basically mild.

This recipe was given to me by a friend and our whole house lived on these for the first few months. They are really tasty!
Ingredients:
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup butter or coconut oil
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons flax seed meal
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons brewer's yeast
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 1/2 cups oats
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
1/2 cup dried cherries
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a small bowl whisk flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and brewer's yeast; set aside. In another very small bowl, combine flax seed meal with 3 tablespoons of water and let sit. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or in a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer), cream butter and sugar on high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Reduce speed to medium; add egg, vanilla and flax seed mixture. Beat until well mixed, about 1 minute. Reduce speed to low; add dry ingredients in 2 batches, mixing just until just combined. Stir in oats, chocolate chips and dried cherries.
- Drop tablespoon-size balls of dough about 2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
Bake 8-10 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool on baking sheet 1-2 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely.
